A well-known and common injury for active adults, tennis elbow (or lateral epicondylitis) is a degeneration of the tendons that attach to the bony bump on the outer side of the elbow. This bump, called the lateral epicondyle, acts as the anchor point for extensor muscles running from it to the wrist. Tennis elbow occurs as a result of aging or repetitive trauma which inflames these muscles. This inflammation results in tenderness and pain which is then worsened by wrist movement. In most cases of lateral epicondylitis, treatment includes the usual assortment of braces and splints, rest, physical therapy and steroid injections. Surgery may be required in the most extreme circumstances.
