LaminectomyChronic and neurological pain disorders can significantly degrade your ability to live a fulfilling life. Consult with an experienced, certified back specialist to determine the cause of your chronic pain, and embark on a treatment method that will eliminate your debilitating pain. Triple-board certified physician Dr. Amr Hosny provides patients with chronic and neurological pain relief with over two dozen pain management treatments. These procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, can get you back to doing what you love: living your life to the fullest! Stenosis is a condition in which the spinal canal is narrowed or impeded. This health concern is characterized by debilitating back pain, resulting from immense pressure or pinching of the nerves in the spinal cord. While pressure on the nerve can be caused by a "slipped disc" or compression of the vertebrae, interspinous process decompression is the best method to treat this; stenosis cannot be corrected with such a method, however, because the bone fragments that impede the spinal canal must be cleared to relieve pressure on the nerve. Correction of stenosis can be done through a lumbar laminectomy; in such a procedure, an incision is created in the lumbar region of the spine. The spinous process - the protrusion on the dorsal side of the vertebrae - is removed to allow the surgeon access to the spinal cavity. The lamina, which is the portion of the vertebra that covers the nerve, is removed. The spinal cord is now essentially exposed, and the spinal canal is opened. This alleviates some of the pinching and pressure that may be affecting the nerve and causing pain for the patient. Next, the surgeon assesses the openness of the nerve foramina - the opening in the vertebra through which the nerve exits the spine - to be sure there is no pressure being placed on the roots of the exiting nerves. The nerve foramina is cleared of all bone fragments or debris, ultimately eliminating all pressure from the affected nerve or nerves. The surgeon then closes the incision and the procedure is complete. Lumbar laminectomy can immediately alleviate back pain associated with nerve pinching and pressure. The opening of the spinal canal can significantly improve the patient's functionality and stature. |
